Fight The Phrag!

August 18, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) will be holding their 4th annual community cutting event, ‘Fight the Phrag’ on Saturday, August 18, 2018. Volunteers from the Collingwood area and staff from the Town of Collingwood, Georgian Bay Forever, OFAH, and NVCA will be teaming up to tackle the Phragmites invasion along the western Collingwood shoreline. Participants will be selectively cutting Phragmites with hand shears and loppers (ensuring not to cut native vegetation) and moving the cut Phragmites to designated areas for drying. Later, the Town of Collingwood will transport the dried Phragmites to a facility for its destruction. There will also be a free appreciation lunch for all that come out and help.

Phragmites is spreading through Collingwood’s coastal wetlands in dense stands, and negatively affecting biodiversity, wildlife habitat, water levels, and human use of the shoreline. We are dedicated to eradicating this invasive species from Collingwood’s shoreline and have been finding success through cutting the stalks underwater to drown the plant.

Anyone interested in coming to Fight the Phrag can find out more information and register on https://fight-the-phrag-2018.eventbrite.com
